More information on the St. Colman's Society for Catholic Liturgy 2008 Conference

[Many of you have no doubt heard of this conference which was mentioned here and elsewhere, but we now have some more detailed information on it, which I am pleased to present to the NLM readership. You can always look at the Conferences section of the NLM sidebar for this sort of information as well. The following are excerpts from the conference bulletin.]

“Benedict XVI and The Sacred Liturgy”

The Conference will be chaired by Professor D. Vincent Twomey, S.V.D. Member of Ratzinger Schulerkreis and author of “Pope Benedict XVI: The Conscience of our Age: A Theological Portrait” (San Francisco, 2007) (German translation: Augsburg 2006).

Professor Manfred Hauke, Lugano, Switzerland
Topic: Klaus Gamber, ‘father’ of the ‘new liturgical movement’.

Born at Hanover (Germany) in 1956, Manfred Hauke grew up in Paderborn (Westphalia). He studied philosophy and theology (1975-1981) and obtained his Doctorate in Divinity under the direction of Professor Leo Scheffczyk whom Pope John Paul II created Cardinal in 2001.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1983, he spent four years as a chaplain in the industrial area of Dortmund, Hagen. In 1987 Hauke became assistant to Anton Ziegenaus, at the University of Augsburg (Bavaria), where he prepared his Habilitation in dogmatic theology in 1991.

In 1993 he was appointed Professor for Dogmatic Theology at the Theological Faculty in Lugano, Switzerland. In 2001 he was assigned to teach Patrology. Mariology is also an area of research interest.

His scientific publications cover the whole spectrum of dogmatic theology and he has written monographs on: the Priesthood of Women, the doctrine of original sin in the Greek Fathers, the Sacrament of Confirmation, Feminist Theology, the theology of Cardinal Leo Scheffczyk and the Mariological initiatives of Cardinal Mercier.

Manfred Hauke has pastoral responsibilities in Lugano and is also prefect of studies in the diocesan seminary of San Carlo at Lugano.

Since 1992 he is member of the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis and, since 2005, he is president of the Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Mariologie (the German Society for Mariology). He is the editor of the series "Collana di Mariologia" (2002), co-editor of the series Quaestiones thomisticae (2007) and of the theological reviews Sedes Sapientiae. Mariologisches Jahrbuch (2004) and Forum Katholische Theologie (2007). He is a member of the editorial boards of the Rivista teologica di Lugano (1996) and of Ephemerides Liturgicae (2007).


Dr. Uwe Michael Lang
Topic: Latin and "sacral vernacular" (Liturgiam Authenticam)

Fr. Lang a priest of the London Oratory is the author of "Turning Toward the Lord: Orientation in Liturgical Prayer." The book first published in German as: Conversi ad Dominum. Zu Geschichte und Theologie der christlichen Gebetsrichtung (Freiburg: Johannes Verlag, 2003, 4th edn, 2006), with a preface by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, has been translated into English, Italian, French, Hungarian and Spanish. He has published various articles on Patristics and liturgical studies and is the editor of Die Anaphora von Addai und Mari: Studien zu Eucharistie und Einsetzungsworten (Bonn: nova & vetera, 2007) and of The Genius of the Roman Liturgy: Historical Diversity and Spiritual Reach. Proceedings of the 11th International CIEL Colloquium held at Merton College, Oxford, 13–16 September 2006 (Chicago: Hillenbrand Books, 2008).


Professor Dennis McManus
Topic: Translation Theory in Liturgiam Authenticam

Fr. Dennis McManus is the Chaplain-in-Residence and Visiting Associate Professor of Theology at Georgetown University.

He received his bachelor’s degree in classical languages and philosophy at Saint Mary’s College of California and completed an M.A. in historical ethics at Georgetown. He holds a doctoral degree in historical theology from Drew University.

He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile (Alabama).

At present, he serves as managing editor of the Paulist Press’ Ancient Christian Writers series and was Vice President of the Stimulus Foundation of New York (1998-2005), which publishes books on the topics of the Shoah, Catholic-Jewish relations, and interreligious dialogue. He was for nine years Associate Director of the Secretariat for Liturgy at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, where he now serves as a staff consultant in ecumenical and interreligious affairs. Fr. McManus held the Smilow Chair in Jewish-Catholic relations at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC (2005-06) and was Director of the Intercultural Forum. Fr. McManus is a member of the Vatican-Baptist dialogue (2006), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ dialogue with the Reformed Churches, and a consultant of the Vox Clara Commission (2001) which is charged with reviewing the
English language translation of the editio typica tertia of the Missale Romanum (2000).


Dr. Alcuin Reid
Topic: The Liturgical Reform of Benedict XVI

Dr. Alcuin Reid gained a PhD from King's College of the University of London in 2002 for a thesis on twentieth century liturgical reform. His international speaking on liturgical topics has included the CIEL Colloquium in Paris (2003) and Rome (2005). He was the keynote speaker at the CIEL UK annual conference in London, England in May 2004 and at the Society for Catholic Liturgy conference in Columbus, Ohio in September 2007. He has edited and published a number of books on the Sacred Liturgy including the crucially important book "Looking at the Liturgy again with cardinal Ratzinger: Proceedings of the July 2001 Fontgombault Conference" (St. Michael’s Abbey Press, 2004) and The Monastic Diurnal (2004). The second edition of his principal work The Organic Development of the Liturgy (Ignatius, 2005) carries a preface by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.


Dr. Neil J. Roy
Topic: The Roman Canon: Deesis in Euchology

Editor, Antiphon: a Journal for Liturgical Renewal, published by the Society for Catholic Liturgy.

Dr. Neil J. Roy was born in Lachine, Quebec, Canada. He was educated in Montreal and Toronto. In 1986 Fr. Roy was ordained a priest of the diocese of Peterborough, Canada.

Majoring in Mediaeval Studies and Latin, Fr. Roy obtained a bachelor’s degree in arts (B.A.) at the University of Toronto. Fr. Roy subsequently earned a baccalaureate in sacred theology (S.T.B.) at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (1985), a licence in sacramental theology (S.T.L.) at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo, Rome (1992), and an M.A. in Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto (1994). He was awarded the Ph.D. (Medieval Studies) by the University of Toronto (2001) with a dissertation in mediaeval liturgy entitled: "The Rituale of Valva-Sulmona (Lucca: Biblioteca Statale 1781): a Twelfth-Century Book of Ordines in Beneventan Script. A Diplomatic Edition with Introductory Study and Notes Emphasising Pastoral Considerations. He is preparing to publish an edition of a priest’s manual from the early eleventh century (Vatican City: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Archivio san Pietro H 58).

Among other things, Dr. Roy has published “Mary and the Liturgical Year” in A Marian Anthology for Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, and Consecrated Persons, ed. Mark I Miravalle (Santa Barbara CA 2007); “The Recovery of the Sacrificial Dimension of Christian Worship” in Inside the Vatican, 14:6 (June-July 2006); “The Feast of the Holy Innocents and its Orations in the Missale Romanum of 1970” in Antiphon, 8:1 (2003); "Rite, Gesture, and Meaning: Incense in Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass" in Ephemerides Liturgicae, 116/2 (2002). He is the author of the introduction to the Encyclopaedia of Catholic Devotions and Practices, ed. Ann Ball (Huntington, IN 2003), and contributed the following articles to The World Book Encyclopaedia (Chicago, IL 2003): “Arianism," "Arius," "Augustine of Canterbury, Saint," "Becket, Saint Thomas," "Bridget of Sweden, Saint," "Brigid of Ireland, Saint," "David, Saint," "Dominic, Saint," "Dunstan, Saint," "George, Saint," "Langton, Cardinal Stephen,"
"Patrick, Saint," "Peter the Hermit," "Savonarola, Girolamo," "Swithin, Saint," "Thomas à Kempis," "Trent, Council of" as well as the article on "Hippolytus of Rome" in The New Catholic Encyclopaedia, revised edition (2002). He authored the article on “Sacramentals” for The New Catholic Encyclopaedia, second revised edition (2007). He is a regular book reviewer for The Catholic Historical Review.

Fr. Roy is currently Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame du Lac, South Bend, Indiana. He is also cofounder of the Research Institute for Catholic Liturgy; a board member of the Society for Catholic Liturgy (1996-current); a member of the American Classical League (1995-current), A.P.I.C.E.S. (1995-current), the Hagiography Society (1995-current), the Henry Bradshaw Society (1995- current), and the Medieval Academy of America (1995-current). He is a life member of Fellowship of Catholic Scholars.
