Fraternity of the Divine Mercy, Italy

I do not believe the NLM has featured here before (at least to any great extent) a priestly society in Italy which is dedicated to the usus antiquior bur which also celebrates the modern Roman liturgy in a spirit of the Reform of the Reform where it is desired in their parishes.

The society is that of the Fraternity of Divine Mercy (Fraternità della Divina Misericordia).

It is encouraging to see a group such as this which celebrates both the usus antiquior and modern Roman liturgy in such beauty.

Here are a few images from their liturgical life, which speak volumes.

I've now added this priestly society to the NLM sidebar.

Do look at their website which will show you more splendid photographs, including from some of their other churches.

Pictures from Mt Athos, Part 2: Koutloumousiou Monastery
Here is another set of pictures graciously shared with us by a friend who recently visited Mt Athos, this time from the Koutloumousiou Monastery, which is 6th in the Athonite hierarchy of the 20 great monasteries. It was founded in the 1060s by a man named Kallistos Koutloumous, a prince of the Seljuk Turks who converted to Christianity, and receiv...

A Review of The Roman Canon and The Words of the Missal
The old Italian saying “He who translates lies” may be an exaggeration, but as with all exaggerations, it contains a grain of truth. Every language has its own distinctive ecosystem, if you will, that is, its own dynamic way of interacting internally. As award-winning translator Edith Grossman explains: Languages trail immense, individual histories...

Dr Kwasniewski’s Interview with Matt Fradd
Our long-time contributor Dr Peter Kwasniewski recently sat down for a very long interview (nearly 4 hours!) with Matt Fradd on his Pints with Aquinas program. The conversation ranges over a wide variety of topics - there are 30 different sections on YouTube, and I confess that I have not yet had time to listen to the whole of it, but of course, th...

The Feast of the Guardian Angels 2025
The Angel of the Lord came down into the furnace together with Azariah and his fellows, and smote the flame of the fire out of the furnace, * and the fire touched them not at all, nor did it hurt them. ℣. Blessed be their God, Who sent His Angel, and delivered His servants that trusted in Him! And the fire... (The fifth responsory of Matins)An...

A Virtual Reconstruction of the Abbey of Cluny
Here’s another big win for the YouTube suggestion algorithm, a new documentary about the building of the third church of the abbey of Cluny, which for over 500 years was the longest church in the world, until it was replaced by the new St Peter’s basilica. Very little of the building remains today, but this documentary gives a very nice virtual rec...

The Life of St Jerome, by Alessandro Allori
In 1577, the Florentine painter Alessandro Allori (1535-1607) was commissioned to decorate the ceiling of a chapel recently added by a nobleman named Niccolò Gaddi to the left transept of Santa Maria Novella, the principal Dominican church of their native city. Gaddi had studied Latin and Hebrew in his youth, and certainly chose to honor the great ...

The Feast of St Michael and All Angels
The traditional title of today’s feast is “The Dedication of St Michael the Archangel”, a term already found ca. 650 A.D. in the lectionary of Wurzburg, the oldest of the Roman Rite that survives, and in the ancient sacramentaries. The Martyrology erroneously refers this feast to the dedication of the famous shrine of St Michael on Mt Gargano in t...

A History of the Popes Named Leo, Part 6: Leo XII
This is the sixth installment of a series on the thirteen papal namesakes of our new Holy Father Leo XIV; click these links to read part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, and part 5. Let’s pretend that the long delay since the last installment was deliberately made so that this could be published on the anniversary of Leo XII’s election. On thi...
